I was working on a review of the Acropolis Museum today and was thinking about the site during the Nazi occupation. I randomly came across these, from Wikipedia Commons, which I'd never seen before and which are pretty creepy:

I've seen similar pictures in the past, I always get really sad and angry.
Look at them. Their nazi dirt and filth on the immortal Acopolis. But of course when they came in Greece, they didn't know where they stepped on. Poor nazis, they didn't know what "greek" actually means. But they finally learnt the real definition of the word, on the night of 30 May 1941 when two brave people and real heroes, Apostolos Santas and Manolis Glezos tore down the Nazi flag...

I first saw these images in Mark Mazower's "Inside Hitler's Greece," which is a great read. Total must.
